Building an AM transmitter is not a job fit only for a rocket scientist, as you could build a simple transmitter using inexpensive materials. The finished transmitter is small enough to fit in your hands and can be finished in around 10 minutes. Depending on the kind of antenna you will use, the simple AM transmitter can transmit music and voice to the other side of a room or across the street.
Materials Needed:
- Crystal oscillator (one megahertz)
- Audio transformer
- Printed circuit board
- Battery (9 volts)
- 9-volt battery clip
- Alligator jumpers
- Phone plug
- Insulated wires

Everyone listens to the radio but really doesn’t know how it works. Just pop in some batteries or plug it in and instantly our favorite station is on. Whether we are listening to music or a podcast. What is an AM transmitter and what does it do?
First off what is a transmitter? Remember the old style TV that had to have an antenna? Sometimes we all used a wire coat hanger to get the reception. This is the same concept. It is the same thing on the radio. We all use the built in antenna to get the station in. So, by using an antenna and an electronic device will in turn produce radio waves. This transmitter will generate a current that will sync up with the antenna. Besides the radio, cell phones, Bluetooth, Wifi, microwaves, remote controls, loudspeakers, and numerous other electronic gadgets these transmitters are vital to have everything work.
